Over a decade ago, Junjie moved in with his widowed mother Meiping after she married Zhong Guocheng. Guocheng had divorced years earlier, and his ex-wife had left with their young daughter Zhi Xin, disappearing from the scene. The union of Guocheng and Meiping brought together two single-parent families. From then on, Junjie gained a half-brother named Zhi Rong. Despite their different backgrounds, the two brothers treated each other sincerely, sharing a bond as close as blood siblings, even though they were from different families and surnames.
Six years prior, Junjie met Zhang Simin, a bookstore clerk in Shenzhen. They fell deeply in love, got married, and had a son named Jiaxi. After applying for five years, Simin finally obtained her one-way permit to Hong Kong and began living with Junjie. As the new bride arrived with her child, Simin started to live fully with Junjie and others. Naturally, this brought about some issues in their interactions. Meanwhile, Zhi Xin reappeared, bringing misunderstandings.
Zhi Rong and Li Wen had been married for many years. Although Li Wen was quite petty, she always prioritized her husband's interests. Despite Zhi Rong's fiery temper, Li Wen never took offense. However, during her pregnancy, Li Wen discovered that Zhi Rong had been secretly meeting with a young woman. She assumed he was cheating, but it turned out that the woman was none other than Zhi Rong's long-lost sister, Zhi Xin. Zhi Xin had grown up in Australia with her birth mother, who later passed away. Zhi Xin came to Hong Kong under an exchange program to attend university and became friends with Ye An'er, the younger sister of Ye Anqi. By chance, Zhi Xin and Zhi Rong reunited. Zhi Xin believed that their father, Guocheng, had an extramarital affair with Meiping, leading to the abandonment of her and her mother. Therefore, she harbored resentment towards Guocheng. Even upon reuniting with her brother Zhi Rong, she insisted he keep their secret hidden from everyone.
Meiping understood Guocheng's dilemma. Since marrying him, she had resolved to be a model stepmother. Thus, she treated Zhi Rong even more affectionately than her own son Junjie. Faced with Zhi Xin's accusations, as long as Guocheng remained silent, Meiping agreed without objection.
Junjie helped a widow, Huang Guihao, which introduced him to her son Ou Shunfeng, who worked at the immigration department in the search team. Initially, Junjie thought Shunfeng was domineering based on what Guihao said, but upon meeting him, he found Shunfeng to be extremely filial. Raised by his mother after his father’s early death, Shunfeng was influenced by Guihao's resilient character. He worked part-time while studying to support his family and never complained. His positive outlook made him a successful example of someone who overcame poverty from a young age.
Junjie and Shunfeng shared similar interests and became good friends. Junjie admired Shunfeng's strong observation skills and extensive life experiences. When Shunfeng joined the investigation team, Junjie enthusiastically recommended him to his superior Mai Qiming, resulting in both joining the team. Junjie learned that Shunfeng was like a son to Qiming, whom Junjie had known for a long time. Qiming, once an idol to all new recruits at the immigration department, had a tarnished reputation when Junjie discovered his relationship with a female classmate, leading her to resign and leave due to emotional distress.
Years later, Junjie encountered Qiming again, becoming his subordinate. Carrying resentment, Junjie initially felt Qiming favored Shunfeng. Through multiple work encounters, Junjie realized Qiming was fair-minded and improved his opinion. He also discovered the female classmate was actually Qiming's assistant Han Yongnian's sister, whose feelings were unreciprocated.
When Junjie faced family troubles, a murder case pushed him to the brink of collapse. Ten years prior, Junjie, Ye Anqi, Liang Zhilun, and Zheng Baiyu entered the immigration department together, becoming close friends. Later, Baiyu transferred to become a police inspector. Investigating a triad member named Hu Jiechen, Baiyu suspected Jiechen of killing a woman linked to Junjie's wife Simin. Through immigration assistance, Baiyu learned Simin had been deported years ago for illegal activities. Junjie was shocked by Simin's hidden past and suspected her relationship with Jiechen. Their enviable cross-border marriage was tested, leading to Simin leaving heartbroken.
After Simin left, Junjie became a single father raising Jiaxi, who suffered emotionally. With help from friend Anqi, Junjie mended his relationship with Jiaxi. Anqi, an immigration assistant burdened with caring for her grandmother and rebellious younger sister Anyi, acted more as a mother to her niece Shishi. Anqi's protective nature extended to helping Junjie and Jiaxi recover.
Anqi spent much of her life helping others, neglecting her own needs. During her time at the immigration department, she bonded with Junjie but developed feelings for Baiyu. After a two-year relationship, they broke up when Baiyu had a third party. Their friendship resumed after Junjie's marital issues. Ambiguity grew between Anqi and Baiyu until Baiyu confessed his renewed feelings. Torn between loyalty to Junjie and her lingering feelings for Baiyu, Anqi faced a difficult choice.
Working alongside Shunfeng in the investigation team, Junjie pursued a fake document syndicate. The leader turned out to be Hu Jiechen, rumored to have ties with Simin. Recognizing a familiar face near Jiechen, Junjie wondered if the investigation team could solve the case and if his and Simin's fate was intertwined further.
