Plot introduction of "Companionship": In the deep autumn of 1951, after the death of his master, kuaiban performer Gong Tianpeng (played by Zhang Guoli) has been living with his master's wife He Guoyu (played by Song Dandan) and her son Yan Shaobin. He Guoyu stopped Yan Shaobin from joining the army, so Gong Tianpeng suggested that Yan Shaobin go to perform in Korea with him as part of a consolation troupe, which would satisfy Yan Shaobin's wish to go to the front line while secretly protecting him. Before leaving, He Guoyu used her gold earrings to make a protective amulet for Gong Tianpeng, hoping they would return safely.

One of Yan Shaobin's main purposes in going to the battlefield was to visit his girlfriend Ge Zi (played by Han Yuxin), who was working as a nurse in the field hospital. But he didn't know that Ge Zi had discovered she was pregnant on the front line. Yan Shaobin wanted to achieve something on the front line before meeting Ge Zi again, but he tragically died while helping the artillery regiment transport ammunition. To ensure Yan Shaobin was recognized as a martyr, Ge Zi concealed the fact that he was the father of her child.

Ge Zi continued her nursing work in grief, and hero wounded soldier Zhao Hongshan (played by Liu Xiaofeng) quietly developed feelings for her. Ge Zi returned to China with the consolation troupe and gave birth to the child. To give the child a legitimate status, Ge Zi asked Gong Tianpeng to fake marry her. This put Gong Tianpeng in a difficult position because he had deeply fallen in love with He Guoyu, who is five years older than him. He could only refuse Ge Zi and reluctantly told her that his beloved was He Guoyu.

Just as everyone was at a loss about the child's issue, He Guoyu found the hastily left marriage certificate of Yan Shaobin and Ge Zi, thus giving the child legitimacy and naming him Yan Zhi Jiang. The child would be temporarily raised by He Guoyu, and Ge Zi, after recovering physically, returned to the Korean battlefield.

Gong Tianpeng has always felt an unshakable guilt over Yan Shaobin's death and secretly decided to take care of He Guoyu and Yan Zhi Jiang forever.
