Plot Introduction of "Aunt Duohè": This drama tells the extraordinary story of Japanese orphan Duohè in post-war China. Sun Li plays the lead role of Duohè, who is called "Aunt" by her biological children due to hiding her true identity. The character spans an age range of nearly 30 years. Filming took place in locations such as Dalian and Fengcheng’s Dalishu Village, with plans to air in 2010.
In 1945, after Japan's defeat, villagers from a Japanese agricultural colony in Heilongjiang fled. A dying Duohè (played by Sun Li) was rescued by the parents of Zhang Jian (played by Jiang Wu). Zhang Jian's wife Zhu Xiaohuan (played by Yan Xuejing) had lost her ability to bear children after jumping off a cliff to escape pursuing Japanese soldiers. Learning this, Duohè offers to bear children for the Zhang family to repay their kindness. After liberation, Zhang Jian could no longer have two wives, so Duohè changes her identity to become Xiaohuan's sister and the children's aunt... until years later when Duohè's mother comes from Japan and the truth about her origins is revealed.
In the autumn of 1945, following Japan's defeat, Japanese civilians living in Heilongjiang as part of an agricultural colonization group committed mass suicide to serve the emperor rather than surrender. Those refusing to commit suicide fled in groups, attempting to reach Dalian via Liaodong to board ships back to Japan. The protagonist Duohè (played by Sun Li), along with her mother and younger sister, joined a group of over 3,000 fleeing refugees. Along the way, hunger and disease claimed many lives, reducing the group from over 3,000 to just a hundred within half a month. As winter approached, some women, including Duohè, were captured by county security forces, who auctioned them off publicly at a price of one dime per kilogram. Master Zhang the Stonemason (played by Du Yuan) and his wife Grandma Guan (played by Sa Rina) were there out of curiosity when a dead woman was placed on their donkey cart by the security forces, who gave them a silver dollar and forced them to bury the body outside town. When they reached the wilderness, they discovered movement in the sack; the person inside was still alive. After some debate, Master Zhang agreed with his wife's suggestion to rescue the girl from the ditch, unable to let a living person freeze or starve to death. Thus, they saved the girl, who is the protagonist Duohè.
After regaining consciousness, Duohè was astonished, wondering why this Chinese family had saved her. She had witnessed Japanese soldiers killing Chinese people and knew how much the Chinese hated the Japanese. Yet this family not only saved her but also treated her wounds, fed her, and provided her with warm blankets. In a daze, Grandma Guan washed Duohè's hair and applied medicine, making Duohè feel like her mother was caressing her. Tears streaming down her face, she called out "Mommy" in Japanese.
There was disagreement within the Zhang family about saving Duohè. Except for the mistress Grandma Guan, almost all other family members opposed it. Their eldest son had been killed by the Japanese army during the anti-Japanese struggle, and their second daughter-in-law Xiaohuan (played by Yan Xuejing) had jumped off a cliff during an autumn chase by Japanese soldiers, losing her unborn child and becoming permanently infertile. They despised the Japanese with clenched teeth, so how could they save a Japanese person? Grandma Guan's reasoning was that even if it were a kitten or puppy left in the freezing cold, you couldn't ignore it, let alone a human life. Not rescuing someone in peril would invite lightning strikes in summer. Moreover, this was a woman—what did Japan's arson and murder have to do with her? She hadn't committed any crimes herself. Around this time, a war occurred near the small town. During the escape, the Zhang family learned about Duohè's background. They realized that the war of Japanese aggression not only brought unimaginable disasters to the Chinese people but also caused immense suffering to the Japanese people. All of Duohè's family had died in that war, leaving her without any relatives in the world. Only then did the family feel how pitiful Duohè was, and no one objected to keeping her anymore.
