Plot Introduction of "Yan Dao": In the early years of the Song Dynasty, Emperor Renzong was an avid lover of inkstones. Every year, he would select outstanding quality and finely crafted inkstones from all over the country as tribute to the imperial court. The city of Duanzhou in Guangdong Province has long been famous for producing Duan inkstones. The old pits in Duanzhou were sealed as royal tributary pits, and the stones mined there would be carved into inkstones by the best craftsmen. The finest ones would then be selected as tribute inkstones to be presented to the imperial court.

The annual inspection and delivery of tribute inkstones to the capital was a major event in Duanzhou, a big day for the people of Duanzhou. Therefore, those fortunate enough to be chosen to create tribute inkstones were often called the "best in the world." Duanzhou had many inkstone studios and countless craftsmen. Among them, Ji Mo Zhai was the most renowned. The master of Ji Mo Zhai, Xiao Jingzhu, had unparalleled skills in carving inkstones. Almost all the tribute inkstones produced annually in Duanzhou were made by him, bringing great fame to Duanzhou. However, being prominent also attracted envy. Many officials responsible for the tribute inkstones harbored resentment towards the Xiao family. Moreover, Xiao Jingzhu's only son Xiao Fei, his adopted son Le Feichang, and Yang Feng were known as the three young masters of Rui Zhou, notorious wastrels known far and wide.

One day, it happened to be the grand occasion when Ji Mo Zhai was presenting its tribute inkstone. Xiao Jingzhu respectfully offered the tribute inkstone, but the supervisor of the tribute inkstones, Chancellor Changxiahou from Shezhou, pointed out that this inkstone was a counterfeit. Xiao Jingzhu was arrested and imprisoned. The magistrate of Duanzhou, Bao Zheng, presided over the trial of the case. The expert invited to authenticate the inkstone was none other than Xiao Jingzhu's long-lost younger sister, Lü Min. Lü Min firmly declared that the craftsmanship of this inkstone could only belong to Xiao Jingzhu. Thus, the Xiao family was inexplicably embroiled in a prison calamity. Although Xiao Fei appeared indifferent on the surface, he was deeply worried about his father and opposed him at every turn. He rashly stormed the courtroom to take the blame for his father but ultimately failed to save him. Xiao Fei was heartbroken. Just before Xiao Jingzhu was taken to the execution ground, an imperial edict pardoning Xiao Jingzhu arrived, ordering him to carve an extraordinary inkstone within six months for use in peace negotiations. It turned out that Xiao Jingzhu's good friend Zhuo Tianyi had once been the emperor's teacher and secretly helped him. At this time, Xiao Fei met Lü Min's mute daughter Ju Ban, and they got along well.

Xiao Jingzhu intended to arrange for Xiao Fei to marry Zhuo Yuer, the daughter of his friend Zhuo Tianyi, with whom he already had a prearranged marriage contract, in order to correct Xiao Fei's impetuous nature. Xiao Fei refused. One trouble after another arose; Xiao Jingzhu worked tirelessly night and day to carve the tribute inkstone but unfortunately ruined the imperial stone given to him. The Xiao family was stripped of their wealth, Ji Mo Zhai was sealed off, and Xiao Fei suddenly fell from being a rich young master to a street beggar, experiencing the coldness and warmth of human life.

To resolve the border situation, the emperor ordered Xiao Fei to complete the tribute inkstone within six months instead of Xiao Jingzhu. To save his father and restore Ji Mo Zhai, Xiao Fei had no choice but to shoulder the responsibility of carving inkstones and embark on the path of seeking the way of the inkstone. In fact, what Xiao Fei hated most was carving inkstones because since childhood, he had seen his mother die tragically in the inkstone pit due to his father's obsession with carving inkstones, which led to years of estrangement between father and son.

When Xiao Fei set out alone to learn the craft, he repeatedly encountered the mysterious woman Lu Rongrong. After several encounters, the two progressed from acquaintance to understanding and decided to travel together. Xiao Fei visited numerous masters, enduring immense hardship, while Lu Rongrong provided her full support, demonstrating remarkable talent. Both shared a passionate spirit, gradually developing feelings for each other.

Through learning from three great inkstone carvers—Li Ming, Zhou Shiyou, and Ling Lin—Xiao Fei profoundly realized the deep connection between the inkstone, grinding, and ink. They form interconnected yet distinct systems, showcasing the profound depth of inkstone culture. Upon returning from his studies, Xiao Fei's carved inkstone received high praise from the emperor, allowing Ji Mo Zhai to reopen. At this point, Xiao Fei became somewhat arrogant.

Lü Min came to settle an old grudge against the Xiao family from years ago. Back then, Lü Min and her master brother Shi Tiehong left, and her father, the original owner of Ji Mo Zhai, Lü Moyou, pursued them. Shi Tiehong suffered serious injuries and soon passed away. Lü Min gave birth to her mute daughter Ju Ban. Lü Min believed everything was caused by her elder master brother Xiao Jingzhu, and she vowed revenge. Lü Min took advantage of Le Feichang's dissatisfaction with living under Xiao Fei's shadow since childhood and his love interest (Zhuo Yuer) who was supposed to marry Xiao Fei, inciting enmity between him and the Xiao family.

Changxiahou was determined to suppress the inkstone industry of Duanzhou. He exploited Lü Min's urgency to find medicine for Ju Ban and Le Feichang's fragile mentality to fabricate a fake tribute inkstone incident, framing Xiao Jingzhu. He was also intent on capturing Princess Jingrong—Lu Rongrong—who was attempting to escape her arranged marriage. Bao Zheng promptly uncovered Changxiahou's plot, leading to his demotion and confiscation of his assets.

When Xiao Fei learned that Le Feichang liked Zhuo Yuer, he sent a letter breaking off the engagement and a forged proposal letter pretending to be from Le Feichang, fulfilling their wish. Le Feichang and Zhuo Yuer eventually married. Xiao Fei swore to win first place at the Mid-Autumn Festival Inkstone Meeting and requested permission from the emperor to marry Rongrong, who readily agreed. However, at this time, war broke out again between Song and Liao. The emperor listened to his ministers' advice and promised Princess Jingrong to the Crown Prince of Liao for a marriage alliance. Before the Mid-Autumn Festival Inkstone Meeting, Xiao Fei was poisoned by Wu Shi San by the scheme of Lü Min and Le Feichang, causing him to perform poorly and nearly lose his life. Only Ju Ban remained by his side, helping him through the ordeal. Hearing of Xiao Fei's defeat, Xiao Jingzhu fell gravely ill. Lü Min revealed to Xiao Jingzhu the truth about her conspiracy with Le Feichang to destroy the Xiao family. Unable to bear the shock, Xiao Jingzhu died in front of Lü Min.

With their hopes of marriage shattered, Xiao Fei and Lu Rongrong fled to the border. Witnessing the continuous warfare and bloodshed at the frontier left them unable to find peace in their hearts. After much emotional turmoil and painful struggles, they finally understood their respective missions and embarked on the journey back to the capital... Xiao Fei was sentenced to have his face tattooed and was exiled to the Duanzhou quarry, while Lu Rongrong donned her wedding dress once more to go to Liao for the marriage alliance. On the long street, one a bridal sedan and the other a prisoner’s cart, their cries echoed painfully in the air!

In the quarry, Lü Min and Le Feichang continued to torment Xiao Fei. However, they never expected that various trials and hardships did not make Xiao Fei sink into despair but instead allowed his talents to fully blossom, making him mentally stronger and his inkstone carving skills increasingly perfect... Returning to Duanzhou, Xiao Fei was devastated upon learning of his father's passing. He vowed to carve the best inkstone in the world, completing his father's unfinished masterpiece "The Way of the Inkstone."

At this time, Le Feichang, who had repeatedly harmed Xiao Fei, was tormented by guilt. His beloved Yuer died in front of him trying to persuade him to repent. Determined to turn himself in, Le Feichang sought redemption. Ju Ban, in an attempt to help Xiao Fei mine stones, was trapped underwater by a trap set by Lü Min and perished at the bottom of the Naihe Pit. Seeing her only companion and daughter killed by her own hands, Lü Min was overwhelmed with grief. Initially intending to kill Xiao Fei for vengeance, she was enlightened by a final letter from her daughter. Her anger subsided, realizing that Xiao Jingzhu had not reported her or Shi Tiehong. Instead, it was Lü Moyou who discovered her elopement. With all hope lost, Lü Min knelt before the Buddha, shaving her head...

Holding an inkstone, Xiao Fei walked calmly into the imperial palace hall. Though it appeared plain, Xiao Fei interpreted the greater meaning of the world from this inkstone. The emperor carefully pondered and felt a sudden broadening of his heart, spontaneously writing the four large characters "Guo Tai Min An" (National Peace and People's Safety).

Xiao Fei eventually became a great master of inkstone carving, and the cultural essence carried by "The Way of the Inkstone" will continue to flow endlessly, remaining fresh and vibrant through the ages!
