Plot of "Knowing": In 1959, during a ceremony celebrating the completion of an elementary school, children placed their drawings into a time capsule, which was then buried under the foundation. Among them, a mysterious little girl wrote down a series of seemingly random numbers on her drawing. Fifty years later, a group of students discovered and opened these capsules, and the drawing by that mysterious little girl ended up in the hands of a boy named Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury). This drawing caught the attention of Caleb's father, Professor John Koestler (Nicolas Cage). Professor Koestler realized that the numbers on the drawing precisely predicted the dates of major disasters over the past fifty years. More surprisingly, it also recorded three upcoming disasters, with the final one being a global catastrophe involving him and his son. Professor Koestler tried to warn the authorities about the impending crisis, but others thought he was overly anxious, leaving him no choice but to act alone. With the help of Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne) and her daughter Abby Wayland (Laura Robinson), Professor Koestler raced against time, striving until they had to face the ultimate disaster and sacrifice...

Behind-the-scenes trivia:

"Knowing" is a new sci-fi work by Hollywood star Nicolas Cage. Notably, two years earlier, his film "Next" of a similar genre suffered a significant failure. However, the Egyptian director Alex Proyas gave him great confidence; Proyas had previously directed the successful sci-fi action film "I, Robot." This comeback did not disappoint the audience, as the film grossed $24.8 million in its opening week, surpassing the romantic comedy "Duplicity" starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. In the sluggish spring box office season, this result was satisfactory and somewhat muted the critics' complaints.

"Knowing" was originally a Columbia Pictures project, with novelist Ryan Pearson writing the screenplay and Rod Lurie and Richard Kelly ("Southland Tales") co-directing. However, due to various reasons, the filming plan was shelved. It wasn't until Escape Artists Production Company revived the project, with the more powerful Summit Entertainment (known for last year's hit "Twilight") providing funding and overall distribution, that the project moved forward. After the new company took over, Stiles White and Juliet Snowden rewrote the script, and the directing role went to Alex Proyas. Proyas hoped that this film would achieve a blend of realism and fantasy akin to "The Exorcist."

Although the story takes place in Boston, most of the filming locations were in Australia, including Geelong Ring Road, Melbourne Museum, Macedon Ranges, and Collins Street. Additionally, scenes were shot at Camberwell Grammar School in the UK (founded in 1958 and later renamed John Adam Primary School), the Haystack Observatory in Westford, Massachusetts, USA, and the Australian Synchrotron for astronomical observation shots.

For this film, Proyas used the Red One digital camera, marking a significant step. He aimed to give the film a harshly realistic style, such as using a two-minute long take to depict Nicolas Cage trying to save passengers from a plane crash. The shooting process was arduous, but the director hoped to enhance the expressiveness of the lens, making the audience feel as if they were there.
