Stepfather Plot Introduction: After the death of her husband, Gao Xiulan struggles to raise four children—a daughter and three boys. Life is extremely tough for her as the boys are mischievous and cause trouble frequently. Despite wanting to remarry, men who see her children shy away from getting involved. Someone introduces her to an older boiler worker at a nearby factory, Mr. Guan (played by Li Youbin). One evening, her eldest son Baojin causes trouble again. Xiulan can't control him, but Mr. Guan's stern gaze makes Baojin afraid. Xiulan feels that Mr. Guan could be a reliable support, resolving the issue of disciplining her children, so she agrees to marry him. After marriage, their relationship deepens, but the mischievous children begin to oppose their stepfather Mr. Guan. This opposition continues until his death without reconciliation.

Faced with these four children, Mr. Guan contemplates leaving multiple times. However, his deep love for this woman, who is like his life, prevents him from doing so. He repeatedly swears not to interfere with the children anymore, slapping himself to reinforce his resolve, but his character doesn't allow it. He finds it hard to turn a blind eye, often intervening, losing his temper, and punishing the children. Over the years, Xiulan fails to mediate this conflict. Even in her final moments, she couldn't make her children call Mr. Guan "Dad." Soon after Xiulan's passing, Mr. Guan also dies. While sorting through his belongings, the children discover a box filled with calendars documenting various events—his monthly salary, haircuts, expenses on tea and fireworks, as well as the birthdays of his children and every instance when he disciplined them. The entries include phrases like: "I'm doing this for their own good. I don't want to hit them. I have no children of my own; how could I not love them?"... Seeing these words, the children cry. They kneel before their stepfather's portrait and call out "Dad!" Eventually, they decide to bury their biological father, stepfather, and mother in a row. They engrave a message on the stepfather's tombstone.
