Introduction to the plot of "The Message":

Spring of 1940, the former Vice Chairman of the Chinese Nationalist Party, Wang Jingwei, colluded with the Japanese government and established a new "National Government" in Nanjing. From then on, the anti-Japanese war entered a new "three kingdoms" period —— Wang Jingwei's Nanjing National Government, Chiang Kai-shek's Chongqing National Government, and the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Government led by Mao Zedong formed a tripartite confrontation, each governing independently and checking each other. After taking office, Wang Jingwei launched three major policies: building an army within his sphere of influence, clearing out the countryside to suppress the communists, while at the same time luring disgruntled military and political leaders from Chiang Kai-shek's faction into his cabinet.

On October 10, 1942, the Wang puppet government held a grand ceremony to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the National Government. A high-ranking official of the Wang puppet government was assassinated, which drew great attention from the Japanese side. Commander Wu Tian of the Imperial Army's intelligence agency suspected that this series of assassination operations were planned by the leader of the Beiping region, "Old Qiu," and hoped to seize this opportunity to dismantle his organization.

Wu Tian investigated that the person responsible for sending instructions, "Old Gui," was hiding within the Anti-Bandit Command Headquarters. He then brought the five most likely suspects who had access to telegrams to the secluded Qiu Manor —— Captain Wu Zhiguo of the Anti-Bandit Command of the Puppet Army, Aide-de-Camp Bai Xiaonian of the Anti-Bandit General Command of the Puppet Army, Director Li Ningyu of the Translation Group of the Anti-Bandit Command Headquarters of the Puppet Army, Administrative Dispatcher Gu Xiaomeng of the Anti-Bandit Command Headquarters of the Puppet Army, and Director Jin Shenghuo of the Military Affairs Department of the Anti-Bandit General Command of the Puppet Army.

The investigation deadline was only five days, and Wu Tian had to use various means, even cruel torture, to find "Old Gui." The five people under house arrest also meticulously observed the other four around them in order to protect themselves, all hoping to quickly expose "Old Gui" so they could leave Qiu Manor safely. Wu Zhiguo is both righteous and evil, Bai Xiaonian is gentle and scholarly, Li Ningyu maintains composure, Gu Xiaomeng is carefree and spoiled, and Jin Shenghuo is slow in handling affairs. Who among them is the real "Old Gui"? After direct confrontations and hidden struggles, who will ultimately escape from Qiu Manor?
