In the movie "The Wealthy Ghost," Lam Chung-faat, played by Tony Leung Ka-fai, lives with his wife and young son, Ah Zai, in a tenement building. One night, strange noises in their apartment keep Ah Zai, who is five years old, awake. Faat sees a set of numbers and later bets on them at the horse racing association, winning a large sum of money. He realizes that there is a wealth-bringing presence in his home. That same night, he encounters an evil ghost who makes a deal with him: everything he has will be split 50-50. True to its word, the ghost ensures Faat's gambling success, but when it comes time to honor the deal, the ghost insists that the "half" includes Faat's family. To protect his wife and child, Faat sets fire to the house, killing himself and the ghost.

Fifteen years later, Ah Zai, now grown, works as a security guard in a factory building constructed on the old site of the tenement. He becomes haunted by supernatural forces. His mother suspects that it’s the restless spirit of her husband and goes to investigate. Indeed, she encounters her husband's spirit, but they are now separated by the boundary between life and death.
