The story, centered on a dysfunctional family, takes place in a unique small town in New Zealand. The film is composed of three parts: a minor's story of returning home, a peculiar Gothic tale. Upon hearing the news of his father's death, renowned international war correspondent Paul Matthew McFadden returns from Europe to his hometown for the funeral. It’s the first time he has set foot on New Zealand soil in seventeen years. His visit shocks his brother Andrew, with whom he has become nearly estranged due to their vastly different personalities. Andrew, a devout believer, half-coerces Paul into staying to settle their father's estate. As Paul visits Jeff's secret cabin, a place his father loved most, filled with cherished literature, fine wine, and philosophical reflections, he begins sorting through the belongings. Unexpectedly, he discovers an intruder has already been there - sixteen-year-old Chellia, who had secretly turned the place into her own fantasy-writing sanctuary to escape reality. Though Paul insists she leave, he doesn’t realize that she is actually the daughter of his childhood sweetheart Jackie, possibly reuniting him with his own flesh and blood. Is this encounter a joy or a sorrow?
