This film, a representative work of director Lau Kar-leung, was one of the seven best-selling Chinese films of the year. The story describes Wong Yu, a vagrant in the early Republic of China era, who is exposed for pretending to be invulnerable to knives and guns using a wooden sword. Chased by villagers, Wong escapes back to the inn where he discovers his master, Kong Yang, has been arrested. Several policemen attempt to capture Wong, but he has already fled to another town. Out of a sense of justice, Wong displays his miraculous martial arts skills in front of a crowd. As rain approaches, he claims to be the reincarnation of the Dragon King of the East Sea, submerging himself in the river and disappearing. Not long after, it begins to pour heavily, leading everyone to truly believe in the presence of divine spirits. Later, Wong encounters Lin Qizhen, a girl who looks like a boy, and they become close friends, adventuring together through the江湖(jianghu).
