The girl, named Haleh, is the daughter of a British immigrant couple. She harbors affection for John, a recently retired American captain who has just arrived. However, there are two other girls her age competing with her for his attention: one is the only daughter of an American industrialist, and the other is a mixed British-Indian young woman. The three girls must face the harsh reality that John can only love one of them. The girls even attempt suicide out of love, but in the end, all three are left disappointed because John has passed away.
