The story tells about the heroics of Yu Lai, a teenager from the Baiyangdian region of Hebei during the Anti-Japanese War. Familiar with his watery surroundings, Yu Lai used his environment to outwit and ultimately defeat the Japanese invaders. Yu Lai was a very mischievous child but also a highly respected child leader; whenever he went out to play, all the children would follow him. This led to a tug-of-war between Yu Lai and his teacher over skipping school. While trying to win the children back from Yu Lai, the teacher fell victim to several of Yu Lai's pranks. However, the teacher quickly gained the upper hand over Yu Lai and soon all the children returned to class, much to Yu Lai's chagrin. One day, while the teacher was giving a lesson, a group of Japanese soldiers arrived, capturing the teacher and leaving three men behind to watch him. Thinking they were on holiday, Yu Lai and his friends suddenly learned that their teacher had been captured. Yu Lai and his regular group of friends then began devising a plan to rescue their teacher. Using their youthful intelligence, Yu Lai and his friends engaged in an intense yet humorous battle of wits with the enemy.
