The plot of this film is based on a real event. A man named Mark Yavorsky, played by Michael Shannon who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Revolutionary Road", brutally murdered his mother with a knife in a neighbor's bedroom after experiencing a series of unexplainable and bizarre events. The story takes a more eerie turn considering that Yavorsky had previously acted in the play "Oedipus Rex", which is commonly known as a Greek tragedy about patricide and incest. Herzog stated: "I have always wanted to make a horror film, but I did not want it to be represented by blood-soaked axes and chains. Instead, I hope the audience can feel a kind of indescribable fear from it."
