The plot of this film is based on a real event. A man named Mark Yavorsky, portrayed by Michael Shannon (nominated for Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Revolutionary Road"), killed his mother cruelly with a knife in a neighbor's bedroom after experiencing a series of unexplainable and bizarre events. What makes the story even more eerie is that Yavorsky had once acted in the play "Oedipus Rex", a well-known Greek tragedy about patricide and incestuous marriage. Herzog said, "I have always wanted to make a horror movie, but not one filled with bloody axes and chains. Instead, I want the audience to feel an inexplicable fear."
