The plot of this film is based on a real event. A man named Mark Yavorsky, played by Michael Shannon who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "Revolutionary Road," cruelly stabbed his mother to death in a neighbor's bedroom after experiencing a series of unexplainable and mysterious events. The even more bizarre aspect of the story is that Yavorsky had once acted in the play "Oedipus," which is well-known as a Greek tragedy involving patricide and marrying one's mother. Herzog stated: "I have always wanted to make a horror film, but I didn't want it to be about bloody axes and chains; instead, I hope the audience can feel a kind of indescribable fear from it."
