The plot of this film is based on a real event. A man named Mark Yuwaz, played by Michael Shannon who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Revolutionary Road", brutally killed his mother with a knife in a neighbor's bedroom after experiencing a series of unexplainable and mysterious events. The story becomes even more bizarre because Yuwaski had once acted in the play "Oedipus", a well-known Greek tragedy about patricide and incestuous marriage. Herzog said, "I have always wanted to make a horror film, but I don't want it to be represented as bloody axes and chains, but rather hope that the audience can feel a kind of inexplicable fear from it."
