The plot of this film is based on a real event. A man named Mark Yavorsky, played by Michael Shannon who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "Revolutionary Road", brutally killed his mother with a knife in a neighbor's bedroom after experiencing a series of unexplainable and strange events. The story gets even more bizarre as Yavorsky had once acted in the play "Oedipus", a well-known Greek tragedy about patricide and incestuous marriage. Herzog said, "I've always wanted to make a horror movie, but I don't want it to be represented by bloody axes and chains. Instead, I hope the audience can feel a kind of inexplicable fear from it."
