The plot of this film is based on a real event. A man named Mark Yavorsky, portrayed by Michael Shannon (nominated for Oscar Best Supporting Actor for his role in Revolution Road), stabs his mother to death in a neighboring bedroom after experiencing a series of inexplicable and strange events. The story becomes even more bizarre as Yavorsky had once acted in the play "Oedipus Rex," which is well-known as a Greek tragedy involving patricide and incest. Herzog stated: "I've always wanted to make a horror film, but not one filled with blood-soaked axes and chains. Instead, I hope the audience can feel an inexplicable fear."
