A French Airlines aircraft carrying 228 people went missing on the local time May 31st, after taking off from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil while on route to Paris in France. Both Brazilian and French parties have actively commenced search efforts.

The plane disappeared from radar

The Air France Airbus A330 flight numbered 447 left Rio de Janeiro at 7 pm local time on May 31st and was originally scheduled to arrive in Paris at 11:15 am on June 1st. It was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members.

According to a spokesperson of the Brazilian Air Force quoted by Associated Press, the passenger jet went missing about 300 kilometers northeast of Natal, a city on the eastern coast of Brazil, near the Fernando - Di Noronha island. This location is approximately 2400 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro.

The French government stated that the exact time the aircraft lost contact with ground control center was at 10:20 am Beijing Time on June 1st.

According to another report by French News Agency, around 2 pm Beijing Time on June 1st, the aircraft disappeared from the radar screen of ground control.

Chris Yates, aviation analyst for British Jane's Strategic Consulting Company, believed that the aircraft might have encountered an emergency situation which led to a sudden drop, leaving no time for the pilots to send out distress signals.
