Plot Summary of TV Series "The Peacock Flies Southeast" Episode 16:
CCTV-8's 2009 ancient costume TV series "The Peacock Flies Southeast" (36 episodes in total), starring Pan Yueming and Sun Feifei.
Synopsis:
"The Peacock Flies Southeast" mainly tells the story of a young woman named Liu Lanzhi (played by Sun Feifei) during the Jian'an era of the late Han dynasty. She was beautiful, kind, intelligent, and hardworking. After marrying Jiao Zhongqing (played by Pan Yueming), the couple respected and loved each other deeply. However, Jiao's mother (played by Wang Ji), who was stubborn and obstinate, had an aversion to her and constantly criticized her, even threatening to force Jiao Zhongqing to drive her away. Helpless under his mother's pressure, Jiao Zhongqing could only persuade Lanzhi to temporarily return to her parents' home until he could find a way to bring her back. At their parting, they made a vow never to betray each other. Unbeknownst to them, after returning home, Lanzhi's opportunistic brother forced her to remarry the son of the governor. Upon hearing the news, Jiao Zhongqing rushed to her side, and together they made a pact to meet in the netherworld. On the day the governor’s son came to welcome her, they both committed suicide out of love for each other. This poem has been called the "Saint of Long Poems" by literary historians and is praised as a monumental work that "inherits the style of the Book of Songs and Chuci, and paves the way for Tang and Song literature."
This drama was written by renowned writers Jin Haitao and Xiong Cheng, directed by Wang Wenjie. The two young actors Pan Yueming and Sun Feifei lead the cast, with notable actors such as Wang Ji, Sa Rina, Bao Guoan, Yao Gang, Ni Tu, Li Bo, Wang Ke, and Wang Hui also joining in. Their superb acting skills are sure to vividly restore the essence of the original work. The show features exquisite and polished visuals, authentic costumes and makeup that truly reflect history, and stunning 3D special effects in post-production. The drama will reinterpret the ancients' longing for free love and their rejection of feudal ethics through the eyes of modern people.
Upon learning that "The Peacock Flies Southeast" was about to be broadcast, Pan Yueming expressed great excitement. He frankly stated that he cared about the audience's evaluation and hoped everyone would like the somewhat awkward "Jiao Zhongqing" he portrayed in the drama. Sun Feifei, long hailed by the media as a "classical beauty," from Princess Jing in "Traces of Swordsmen," to Dong Xiaowan in "Seven Swords Descending from Mount Tian," and then to Ajiu in "The Blood Sword," every ancient costume appearance captivated large numbers of viewers!
"The Peacock Flies Southeast" has been hailed as China's version of "Romeo and Juliet." Whether in terms of its literary value or thematic subject matter, it surpasses its Western counterpart. It denounces the evils of feudal ethics, parental dominance, and the concept of social hierarchy, expressing the reasonable desire of young men and women for autonomy in marriage and love. Earlier, the production team released exciting trailers of the series, which generated significant interest among audiences. They described it as a masterpiece that combines the lens language of art films, the poetic ambiance of classical poetry, and the compassionate profundity of Zen philosophy into a grand synthesis of traditional Chinese aesthetics.
