TV series "Lanterns at Dusk" full episode plot:

In the early 1980s, people had just awakened from the nightmare of the "ten years of turmoil," and the new life was like a factory machine restarting. A group of young female workers at the state-owned Happy Cotton Mill began their season of romance.

Wei Sha fell in love with army officer's son Liu Xiaofeng. Before they could discuss marriage, Liu Xiaofeng joined the army and went to the front lines. Soon, Wei Sha discovered she was pregnant. Although she knew Liu Xiaofeng loved her and formal marriage was only a matter of time, since Liu Xiaofeng was serving in the military, the child could not be born after their marriage. This left the inexperienced Wei Sha feeling very panicked, so she sought out Liu Xiaofeng's mother. To her surprise, Liu's mother did not like her soon-to-be daughter-in-law. She sent Liu Xiaofeng to the army precisely to sever their relationship. Despite being ridiculed by Liu's mother, Wei Sha did not give up. She pinned her hopes on Liu Xiaofeng and decided to wait for his reply before making any decisions. However, she did not know that by then, Liu Xiaofeng had already gone to the front lines with his unit and could no longer write back to her in time. As she waited anxiously for Liu Xiaofeng's letter, her belly grew day by day until it was finally noticed by her mother. For a traditional woman, having a child out of wedlock was absolutely unacceptable, so she insisted that Wei Sha have an abortion. However, Wei Sha insisted on waiting for Liu Xiaofeng's reply before making a decision.

At this point, something significant happened at the factory, forcing Wei Sha to make a decision. Model production group leader Li Sumei once had a beautiful first love, but because her boyfriend was the child of a "black category five," under the political climate at the time, Li Sumei had to painfully end their relationship. With the abandonment of the extreme leftist policy of "class struggle as the guideline," her first love rekindled, and during one rendezvous, they were discovered. The entire factory buzzed with criticism, and the leadership revoked her title as a model worker and removed her from her position as the head of the model group. Unable to bear the pressure of public opinion, Li Sumei eventually committed suicide. This incident deeply shocked Wei Sha. Meanwhile, Liu Xiaofeng's prolonged silence made her feel desperate. In her helplessness, she agreed to her mother's request.

To avoid public attention, her mother took her far away to her aunt's home in Anhui, where she gave birth to a boy. However, her mother told her that due to premature birth, the child died shortly after being born. In reality, her mother had given the child to her aunt's daughter. Not long after returning to the factory, Wei Sha finally received the news of Liu Xiaofeng's death in battle. The double blow was almost unbearable for Wei Sha. What pained her even more was that she had to endure alone the bitter consequences of her youthful naivety. From then on, Wei Sha seemed like a completely different person. Her once cheerful and carefree smile disappeared, and it became rare to see her in the joyous dance halls. She devoted all her energy to work, finding solace in hard labor to forget her inner pain. Little did she expect that her dedication would bring unexpected rewards. Not only did she receive praise from the factory leadership and become a production role model, but she also found love. Chen Jun, the son of the factory party secretary and a technical graduate from a worker-peasant-soldier university, had many admirers, yet he fell in love with the mature and steady Wei Sha. With the support and persuasion of both sets of parents, Wei Sha's frozen heart began to thaw. A desire to forget the past and start anew led her to quickly enter into marriage with Chen Jun. However, neither of them realized that their union was destined to end in tragedy.

Due to her unforgettable first love, Wei Sha struggled to let go of her thoughts for Liu Xiaofeng. Even after marrying Chen Jun, she couldn't reignite her passion for him, leaving Chen Jun feeling lost. He often drank alone to relieve his boredom and unexpectedly met his former lover, Wu Meili. When he learned that Wu Meili had married another man out of anger over him choosing Wei Sha, leading to an unhappy life, Chen Jun felt deeply guilty.

Xu Hongchang was originally a farmer near the Happy Factory. Strong and resourceful, he took advantage of the reform and opening-up policies. Using his own land and cheaply purchasing discarded equipment from the Happy Factory, along with retired skilled workers, he established a cotton mill. Though it couldn't rival the scale of the Happy Factory, his flexibility and hard work quickly helped him capture part of the market. Later, he founded a trade company, further expanding his business. Now, he is a well-known local private entrepreneur. Since most of the workers in the cotton mills were women, he used to stand at the factory gate every day, greedily watching the fashionably dressed female workers flow in and out, which became a sight he never tired of. Among them, Wei Sha left an indelible impression on him. Due to the urban-rural divide, he knew he couldn't overcome it, although later his economic status improved, he had already married a rural woman, and Wei Sha was also married. However, this sentiment remained buried deep within him. During their encounter in Shenzhen, he and Wei Sha finally had the chance to spend time alone. His generosity and righteousness made Wei Sha develop a favorable impression of him.

Once, Wei Sha traveled to Shenzhen on business and coincidentally met Liu Xiaofeng's old comrade Sun Rujun. Sun Rujun is now the China general agent for a well-known multinational corporation, and he has funds ready to invest in the textile industry. Because Liu Xiaofeng entrusted him to take care of Wei Sha before his death, he decided to help Wei Sha. Wei Sha, however, thought of the Happy Factory, knowing how desperately it needed these funds. Only by injecting these funds could the Happy Factory escape its difficulties. Therefore, she brought Sun Rujun back to her hometown without going home first, heading straight to the Happy Factory. Chen Jun found it hard to believe this unexpected good news until the preliminary agreement was signed. At the celebration banquet, Chen Jun couldn't resist drinking too much. On the way home driving Wei Sha, unfortunately, there was an accident. To protect Wei Sha, Chen Jun suffered serious injuries. In his dying moments, he grabbed Wei Sha's hand, confessed his inner guilt, and said that he had only ever loved one woman—Wei Sha. This touching scene was witnessed by Xu Hongchang and Wu Meili who had rushed over upon hearing the news, and their anger can be imagined.

The shareholding transformation of the Happy Factory was completed and successfully listed. Wei Sha was unanimously appointed as the general manager by the board of directors. At the unveiling ceremony, city leaders, Sun Rujun, Xu Hongchang, Wei Sha, and overseas guests stood on the stage. Wei Sha looked at the happy crowd below and was overwhelmed with emotion. Amidst the clamor of drums, she clearly heard a voice: "Mom—" She turned her head and saw a young man holding flowers walking towards her, with her cousin following behind, waving at her continuously. She understood that the moment she had been waiting for for so many years had finally arrived...
