Introduction to the plot of "The Mystery of the Dark House": Many years ago in Beijing, there was an old and mysterious legend: In 1900, when the Eight-Nation Alliance attacked Beijing, Empress Dowager Cixi, before hastily fleeing westward, had eight carts of gold and jewels from the Forbidden City hidden in an ancient well in a eunuch's secret house outside the palace. Later, due to continuous warfare and political movements, people gradually forgot about this legend.

A century later, in an old-style quadrangle courtyard facing demolition, Wang Yidou, who has dreamt of getting rich all his life but whose luck always seems to turn sour, is constantly troubled by the dream of holding golden bars, unable to sleep peacefully.

Wang Yidou lives in the east room while Zizi’s mother lives across the way in the west room. Though they are in-laws, their relationship has turned sour. The reason is that Zizi’s mother still holds onto the household registration book and refuses to allow Zizi and Mantun to get married, which means that Wang’s family will lose a set of resettlement housing they could have obtained.

Leaves, the sister, steals the household registration book at Mantun’s pleading, but unexpectedly, Zizi returns it to her mother. The stubborn Zizi confronts her domineering mother fiercely, yet she is dissatisfied with her husband and public-in-laws repeatedly pleading with her mother.

Just then, Wang Yidou, who has dreamt of getting rich all his life, suddenly discovers an ancient well hidden in his own house. His initial exploration makes him believe firmly that the beautiful legend is about to come true, and he is going to get rich. The feeling of not being able to keep quiet yet not daring to make a sound almost drives him crazy. He drags his son Mantun into their secret operation. Mantun, who doesn’t believe in “falling pies from the sky,” has to work day and night digging wells under his father’s coercion, while also practicing his verbal skills under Zizi’s urging to sell insurance, which exhausts him and causes him great pain. The abnormal behavior of the Wang family father and son raises different reactions from different people in the yard and arouses Zizi’s suspicion.

Zheng Archaeology asks Xia Wuye about historical cultural relics cases, but Xia Wuye claims ignorance and uses a feather duster to scatter dust everywhere. At night, a sudden pig-like scream is heard; it turns out that Mantun touched something cool and fleshy in the ancient well. Mantun's scream alarms the neighbors, and the lights in Zizi's mother's house, Lijen's house, and Wu Fei's rented house in the west room of Lijen's house are all lit, except for Xia Wuye's house, which remains dark. In the alley, under dim light, a black cat watches every move in the yard intently.
