Plot Introduction

This is a story of five days and four nights set in the Warring States period.

Luyi, a small city in the State of Zhao. Three years ago, just after the lord of the city Jucong (played by Wang Xueqi) married his young and beautiful wife Li (played by Fan Bingbing), he led all the adult men of his clan to join the battle between Qin and Zhao at Changping. Li and the women, children, and elderly waited every day for news that the State of Zhao had repelled the Qin forces so the men could return home sooner...

At Changping, the Zhao army was heavily defeated, and the Qin army spent the night massacring the captured Zhao soldiers; the scene was both cruel and tragic. Qin soldier Xia (played by Huang Jue), driven by the desire to go home and harvest, quietly left the battlefield. On his escape route, Xia met a young Qin soldier Ze (played by Du Jiayi). The two had very different personalities and went from mutual suspicion to embarking on the journey home together. Meanwhile, one Qin patrol team after another was setting traps to capture deserters from both Qin and Zhao...

At dawn, Xia and Ze were found unconscious by the river near Luyi and were saved by the women of the city. When they woke up and realized they were in Zhao territory, they were terrified and lied, claiming they were also from Zhao. The women of Luyi were overjoyed to see the two 'Zhao soldiers' and hoped to hear news about the war and their men, so they began to entertain them with the best hospitality.

The two Qin soldiers knew that the men of Zhao had already died in the massacre. In order to survive, Xia and Ze fabricated a lie before the excited women of the entire city, claiming that Zhao had achieved a great victory over Qin. Upon hearing this, the whole city erupted in jubilation. Xia and Ze were treated as heroes of Zhao, an honor neither of them had ever experienced.

However, Lady Li, the wife of the city lord (played by Wang Ji), and the priestess (also played by Wang Ji) maintained a calm and somewhat indescribable suspicion about the entire event. Nevertheless, lies might be easier to accept than the truth... And the danger of massacre slowly loomed over everyone in the city...
