Plot Introduction:

The male head of the Zhou family, Zhou Zu Kang, studied in Germany earlier in his life. During his time there, a close friend was wanted by the German police for participating in the Red International Revolution and was eventually arrested and killed. Out of a sense of righteousness, Zhou Zu Kang married his friend's pregnant fiancée, Zhao Man Jun, and they had a son named Zhou Han Ying. After completing his studies and returning to Chongqing, he couldn't explain the situation to his first wife and children, so he moved north with Zhao Man Jun to Beijing, where he became a university professor and then an official in the Ministry of Education. Zhou Zu Kang's first wife, Gu Yu Xiu, faced adversity and was determined to raise their two sons and daughter. The eldest son, Zhou Guan Zhong, joined the army at the age of thirteen or fourteen. Over a decade later, he became a division commander and led his troops to defend Beijing, bringing his family to live together in the city.

In the spring of 1937, as Sino-Japanese relations were on the brink of war, Zhou Guan Zhong was ordered to visit Japan to attend the Emperor's birthday celebration, which caused strong dissatisfaction among the students in Beijing. Zhou Min Rou, the youngest daughter of the Zhou family, participated in school-organized anti-Japanese protests and encountered Zhou Zu Kang, who came to dissuade the students on campus. The military police intervened to suppress the protest, and Min Rou was arrested and detained in the Beijing Army Military Reflection Institute. Min Rou's arrest brought the two unique families of the Zhou household back into contact.
