Mary and Max tells a very simple story of what happened between two pen pals. Mary Dinkle is a little chubby girl, who is somewhat depressed and lonely, living in the Melbourne suburbs. Max Horwitz is an obese Jewish man with Asperger's syndrome (a kind of autism) living in messy New York. Their correspondence spanned two continents and lasted for years. The friendship between these pen pals was preserved through letter after letter. The film takes the audience on a journey about friendship, self-awareness, and introspection, revealing the mental worlds of these two individuals and narrating the essence of humanity.
