The story tells of a little girl named Alice who fell asleep while reading with her sister by the river. In her dream, she chased a rabbit wearing a waistcoat and fell down its hole into a wonderful world. In this world, she sometimes grew larger and sometimes smaller, so much so that once she fell into a pool made from her own tears. She also met the moralizing Duchess, the enigmatic Cheshire Cat, the mythical Griffin and Mock Turtle, the Queen of Hearts who always shouted to have others' heads cut off, and a group of card soldiers. She attended a mad tea party, an odd croquet game, and a trial. It was only when she finally clashed with the Queen that she woke up, finding herself still lying by the river, her sister gently brushing a few leaves off her face which she had mistaken for cards in her dream. The book is full of interesting wordplay, puns, riddles, and cleverness, so it is sometimes difficult to translate. For example, the story in the title of Chapter Two was misheard by Alice as the same-sounding "tail," causing some amusement. Since it was originally a self-entertainment piece for a friend's children, many character names in the story allude to people around the author. For instance, the Dodo in Chapter Three is the author himself because he stammered and sounded like that word, the Duck is a friend, the Parrot is Alice's sister, and the Eaglet is Alice's younger sister.
