Effi Briest is Fontane's masterpiece, a tragic story about the marriage of noble lady Effi Briest. This version was filmed in Germany. Effi Briest's mother was in love with Baron Innstetten before her marriage. When Effi grew up, her mother arranged for her to marry him. Innstetten was the mayor of the seaside town of Kessin, preoccupied with climbing the social ladder and not caring about his wife. Effi had a large gap in age and feelings with her husband, feeling empty in life. Soon she met Major Crampas, a friend of her husband. Crampas was a playboy who manipulated women and seduced Effi. Later, when Innstetten was transferred to Berlin, Effi thus broke away from Crampas. Six years later, Innstetten accidentally discovered the past correspondence between Crampas and Effi and learned about their relationship. For the honor of the nobility, he challenged Crampas to a duel, killing him, and then divorced Effi. In the end, Effi died of illness at her family home.
