"Three Loves Too Late" tells the story of Thomas, played by Banafsheh Pourkhachi. Thomas is a German soldier who has just returned from the battlefield in Afghanistan and has not yet recovered from the shock of the front lines. Meanwhile, Germans who have lived decades of peaceful lives don't know how to treat people like him. Thomas returns to his hometown to claim the inheritance left to him by his deceased mother - a house that is almost collapsing - but faces numerous obstacles. The economy of Thomas's hometown is extremely depressed. Later, he meets Ali, a Turkish immigrant, played by Hermine Gfrerer. Despite various obstacles, Ali successfully runs a chain snack shop in the area and has a beautiful German wife, Laura, played by Nina Hoss. Since Ali had his driver's license revoked due to drunk driving, he hires Thomas to drive for him and also introduces Thomas to his own wife. Apparently, although Laura and Thomas share more common language, an ambiguous sentiment arises between the two.
