Young and pretty Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) works at a bank in Los Angeles. Her job is to review and approve small loans. Her career seems bright, and her personal life is also quite fulfilling as she has a charming professor boyfriend named Clay Dalton (Justin Gaston). Their life is happy and peaceful until one day, a mysterious Gypsy woman, Mrs. Ganoush (Rona Refay), comes to the bank and pleads with Christine to extend the deadline for her home loan.

Faced with a dilemma—should she sympathize with Mrs. Ganoush and make an exception or follow the rules to impress her boss, Mr. Jackson (David Paymer), for a promotion—Christine ultimately chooses the latter and reclaims Mrs. Ganoush's house. Humiliated, Mrs. Ganoush seeks revenge by tearing off a button and cursing Christine, turning her life into a living hell. On one hand, Christine suffers daily from the torment of hell, and on the other hand, her atheist boyfriend misunderstands her strange behavior. In the end, she seeks help from a fortune-teller, Ramesh (Dilip Rao), to escape from this hellish situation. The method Ramesh uses to fight fire with fire forces Christine to face even greater torment.
