The retired old professor and his wife spend their vacation days at their lakeside cottage in New England, facing various crises of aging amidst the tranquility. His daughter has recently gone through a divorce and is in a state of confusion. The estranged father and daughter finally reconcile thanks to their thirteen-year-old grandson living with them for a while. The film depicts Norman Thayer, a grumpy retired professor, and his wife Ethel, who live beside a golden pond bathed in sunlight in the countryside of Maine. Their old friends have all passed away, leaving them feeling somewhat lonely. Their distant relationship with their daughter takes a turn when she, having just divorced and wanting to go on vacation with her new boyfriend, leaves her son with the elderly couple. Norman suffers from heart disease, and Ethel not only looks after her husband but also acts as a mediator between him and their daughter. After a series of events, the two generations finally reconcile, becoming a harmonious family.
