We Are Marshall is based on a true story, set in 1970 in Huntington, West Virginia, at Marshall University. The university's American football team, the Thundering Herd, after playing a game against East Carolina University's Pirates team, encountered a storm while returning home by plane, resulting in a tragic crash where all players, coaches, and staff on board perished. This accident was considered the greatest disaster in the history of American college sports teams, and it seemed as if the entire town was swept by grief.
In the midst of this sorrow, President Donnie Durdan (David Straithairn) had to make the difficult decision to disband the team. However, just before the decision was finalized, the faculty, students, and residents of the town united strongly, prompting the school's board to put the disbandment issue on hold. Deeply moved, President Durdan decided to reorganize the team but faced the predicament of not being able to find a coach. Eventually, Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey), from Wooster College in Ohio, took on the hot potato that no one wanted—becoming the head coach of the team—and worked hard to persuade Red Dawson (Matthew Fox) to serve as an assistant coach.
However, they still faced a major challenge: there were very few remaining players on the Thundering Herd team. Thus, these two coaches had to overcome difficulties, searching for potential freshmen students one by one, and even recruiting players from other schools in hopes of reassembling a new Thundering Herd team. But just before the game, the newly reorganized team might be unable to participate due to age restrictions for the next game, reigniting the hope of both the team and the townspeople.
Finally, through President Durdan's efforts, an exception was granted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, allowing the Thundering Herd to become the youngest American football team in the U.S. The question remains: can these rookie players who have never played American football create a miracle, survive this severe test, and face games that seem impossible to win?
