Lucy, played by Renée Zellweger, lives in Miami, the largest city in the southeastern United States. She is an ambitious career woman who spends all her time thinking about how to do her job well and never really gives much thought to other aspects of her life. Her interpersonal relationships are quite strained; she speaks harshly to her colleagues and never bothers with how to get along with others because, in her view, things outside of work don't deserve attention. To her, a woman should prove her worth through relentless struggle, and everything else is unimportant and can be ignored. Because of Lucy's attitude toward dealing with people, those around her keep their distance. However, Lucy herself has never noticed this, as she only pays attention to whether she has bought new shoes, if her new car has been scratched, or how far along her work projects are. Thus, things generally remain peaceful.

One day, the company assigns Lucy to a small town in Minnesota due to business needs. Although Lucy is very reluctant to go there, she considers that this transfer might be part of her grassroots training before a promotion within the company. For the sake of advancing her career, Lucy ultimately decides to go to this small town. Life here is drastically different from her life in Miami. All the luxurious, dynamic, and fashionable living environments are gone, replaced by rural life filled with cowboys and farms. Though Lucy finds it hard to adapt to such a life, for the sake of her work, she consoles herself and endures it silently.

As Lucy spends more time in this town and gradually adjusts to its pace, she begins to develop feelings for it. She starts to realize that what she pursued before wasn't really meaningful. Here, she slowly begins searching for answers on how to make her life more self-fulfilling and enriching. What is her dream? This is the first time Lucy reflects on this question while in this small town. Especially, for the first time, she begins considering her personal life, finding answers in a man named Ted Mitchell, played by Harry Connick Jr.
