The married man Jean falls in love with a young, beautiful and naive woman named Catherine, thus beginning a passionate romance. Since Jean is bad-tempered and cannot decide whether to divorce his wife or break up with Catherine, their relationship remains at a deadlock. Finally, Catherine, unwilling to remain an older unmarried woman, leaves Jean and becomes engaged to someone else.
