During the Qing Dynasty, both Shaolin and Wudang had a great number of martial arts experts. Shaolin was dedicated to the cause of overthrowing the Qing and restoring the Ming, while the Wudang sect willingly served as henchmen for the Qing rulers. Thus, the two sects were in an adversarial relationship. Tong Qianjin, a young Manchu orphan who had been bullied by his own clan since childhood, harbored deep resentment towards his kinsmen. He joined the Shaolin Monastery to learn martial arts, where he connected with fellow disciples like Hu Huiquan to carry out anti-Qing and pro-Ming activities. In order to counter the Shaolin disciples, the Wudang experts sent their own batches of disciples down the mountain, leading to encounter after encounter with Tong, sparking one battle after another.
