Today, Li Weisen, the vice president of the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping and spokesman for the news, announced at a press conference held by the State Information Office the elevation data of 19 famous scenic mountains that were approved by the State Council.

Li Weisen said that in order to meet the demands from all sectors of society on important geographic information data, since July 2006, the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping has organized relevant provincial administrative departments of surveying and mapping to carry out the elevation measurement work of the first batch of 19 famous scenic mountains, obtaining relatively accurate data.

These famous scenic mountains are carriers of Chinese civilization, concentrating important cultural landscapes and natural resources of our country, highlighting the cultural connotation and spiritual depth of China's five thousand years. The legal publication of the elevation data of famous peaks in our country is conducive to standardizing the phenomenon that the elevation data of many peaks in our country are not unified, inaccurate, and even differ greatly; it is conducive to standardizing the behavior of reviewing and publishing important geographic information data, guiding the public to use authoritative important geographic information data, ensuring the accuracy and authority of important geographic information data used in national economic construction, social development, and foreign exchanges; it is conducive to enhancing citizens' love for the country's beautiful rivers and mountains, strengthening citizens' national map awareness, and promoting the sustainable development of culture and tourism.

Approved by the State Council and authorized, the elevation data of the first batch of 19 famous scenic mountains are now announced as follows: Mount Tai 1532.7 meters, Mount Hua 2154.9 meters, Mount Heng 1300.2 meters, Mount Heng 2016.1 meters, Mount Song 1491.7 meters, Wutai Mountain 3061.1 meters, Yuntaishan 624.4 meters, Putuo Mountain 286.3 meters, Yandang Mountain 1108.0 meters, Mount Huang 1864.8 meters, Jiuhua Mountain 1344.4 meters, Mount Lu 1473.4 meters, Jinggang Mountain 1597.6 meters, Sanqing Mountain 1819.9 meters, Longhu Mountain 247.4 meters, Laoshan 1132.7 meters, Wudang Mountain 1612.1 meters, Qingcheng Mountain 1260.0 meters, Emei Mountain 3079.3 meters.

The State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping will work with the Ministry of Construction to set up unified elevation marker steles on these peaks.
