Picasso's oil painting "The Boy with the Pipe" was sold for a staggering price of $141.6 million, breaking the world record for auctioned paintings and becoming the most expensive painting in the world to date. Vincent van Gogh's 1890 creation, "Portrait of Dr. Gachet," was sold for $82.5 million in 1990. "Irises" was completed in May 1889; like sunflowers, Van Gogh seemed to also enjoy painting this type of plant. In 1892, Tanguy (a friend of Van Gogh) sold this painting to critic Octave Mirbeau—one of Van Gogh's earliest admirers—for 300 francs. Like many other paintings by Van Gogh, this portrait was continuously bought and sold after his death. At an auction in 1988, someone bid a sky-high price of $53 million for it.
