Recently, a shocking incident was posted on a forum in Changzhou. The post claimed that during the process of listening to villagers' complaints about demolition issues, the Party Secretary of Honglian Village in Henglin Town, Wujin District, suddenly drove his car towards the villagers, resulting in three people being knocked down and injured, including a 23-month-old baby who was thrown several meters away, immediately developing a large lump on his head and requiring emergency hospital treatment.
Local town government officials stated that the police have already intervened in the investigation. A relevant town leader said, "If the situation is true, we will deal with it seriously."
Villagers: The village secretary hit multiple people
"The village secretary maliciously said 'I'll run you over,' then quickly stepped on the gas pedal and drove towards the villagers." On June 21st, someone reported on a forum in Changzhou that more than ten villagers from Honglian Village went to the village committee to discuss demolition matters. They encountered the village secretary preparing to drive out, so the villagers surrounded the car and spoke with the secretary inside regarding related issues. "Unexpectedly, half an hour later, everyone at the scene was shocked when the village secretary actually started the car and drove into the villagers, causing three people to be knocked down and injured."
Yesterday, many local villagers gathered at the Henglin Town government office, filling up a large meeting room. These villagers stated that they were there seeking justice for the incident where three villagers were run over by the village secretary on June 21st.
Cha Weikang, who was present at the scene, described the event consistent with the online post. "After about less than half an hour of discussion, Zhou suddenly said, 'I need to go out on business, move aside, or I'll run you over!' After saying this, he (Zhou) suddenly accelerated and drove forward." A grandmother surnamed Gu standing in front of the car was knocked down, as well as Wang Yafeng holding her grandson. Both Wang Yafeng and her grandson fell backward, hitting their heads on the ground. The grandson cried loudly, immediately swelling up a large lump on the back of his head, while Wang Yafeng's arms and legs were bleeding profusely. Another elder also suffered leg injuries.
Reporters saw a document written by the villagers detailing the events, signed by 13 villagers who were present at the time.
Villagers said that after the incident, Zhou hid in the car and did not come out, while calling the police and bringing some unidentified individuals to the scene. After the incident, many villagers rushed to the scene; the family of the child who was knocked down tried to drag Zhou out but failed.
Injured individuals are still receiving treatment at the hospital
Yesterday morning, reporters met Wang Yafeng and her grandson at Henglin Hospital while they were getting medicine and intravenous fluids. Wang Yafeng is 53 years old. Reporters observed red ointment applied to her arms and feet, and a large patch of red ointment on the right side of her grandson's head. "Yesterday, a large bump appeared on his head, scaring me to death. Later, the doctor examined him and found no serious problems temporarily, but he needs to stay in the hospital for observation," she explained.
"I stood in front, about one meter away from the car. He suddenly drove towards us, and I didn't even have time to retreat, falling to the ground with my grandson," Wang Yafeng recalled, her eyes turning red. "I'm old, so if I die from the fall, it's fine. But I'm worried about my grandson, who is only 23 months old. If he suffers any head injuries, what should I do!" Wang Yafeng mentioned that due to the shock, her blood pressure skyrocketed to 180, "I originally had mild hypertension, but it never reached this level before. The doctor just prescribed medication and intravenous fluids to lower my blood pressure. My head still hurts terribly."
Wang Yafeng added that Grandma Gu, who was standing beside her, around seventy years old, also suffered leg injuries.
In the documents provided by the villagers, reporters noticed that the villagers demanded "compensation and apology from the perpetrator, and that the perpetrator be brought to justice."
Town Government: If verified, strict punishment will follow
Yesterday, Director He of the Henglin Town Judicial Office told reporters that the cause of the incident stemmed from the village's demolition work. Since May, after officially announcing the demolition-related situations to the villagers, various emotions have persisted among the villagers. "Almost every day, dozens of villagers visit the village committee to voice their concerns. Actually, the town government has clearly stated that demolition can only proceed after gaining the agreement of the majority of villagers, and currently, it is still in the discussion and argumentation phase," Director He noted.
Regarding whether Zhou intentionally drove into people, Director He stated, "A 'collision' definitely occurred. Whether it was intentional or unintentional, we currently do not know, and it requires further investigation by the public security authorities." Director He mentioned that yesterday afternoon, the police took statements from the relevant parties involved and are currently investigating and handling the matter.
Deputy Mayor Tang of the Henglin Town government also expressed, "If the village secretary indeed intentionally ran over people, this is definitely not a trivial matter. If the police investigation confirms the truth, the town government will handle it seriously."
Deputy Mayor Tang analyzed that such incidents may result from insufficient prior publicity efforts. "In our town, some villages carry out work more thoroughly. Before initiating demolition work, they display plans to the villagers and conduct extensive publicity beforehand. Honglian Village might have fallen short in this area, failing to display plans to the villagers and lacking sufficient publicity. Communication and coordination efforts were also inadequate," he concluded.
