Enterprises - high-end interviews - real estate broadcast - focus attention - special planning - Weibo, reporter Luo Qin, Hou Tingting, photographer Liu Chenping. It is understood that at the beginning of this year, the city urban management bureau began to formulate the setting guide for Nanjing road signs, which will be used to guide and standardize the production and installation of road signs by construction, transformation, and maintenance units.

The earliest road signs were mostly made of concrete, later changed to stainless steel materials, and there were single-pole, double-pole, and lightbox forms. Nanjing City had updated its road signs on a large scale twice at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Reflective stickers maps were equipped on the road signs of main and secondary roads, making it convenient for foreigners to check and ask for directions. According to the standards for road sign settings, the size, font, color, and form of the road signs all have corresponding standards. However, the installation of Nanjing's road signs became increasingly chaotic, not only in different forms but also in various colors, such as 304L stainless steel plates.

The road signs in streets and alleys are inconsistent, such as the road signs on Jiuzhi Gate Road and Beiting Alley being of two different styles, while the differences between the old town area and Hexi are even greater.

326 new road signs have already been set up.

Reason: Multiple entities responsible for setting up road signs

Why are Nanjing's road signs so varied in color and form?

In this guide, road signs are divided into three types: Type A road signs for roads with widths greater than or equal to 16 meters, Type B road signs for roads with widths between 7 to 16 meters. Both Type A and B are installed 2.5 meters above the ground, differing only in the size of the sign. For roads with widths less than 7 meters, Type C road signs are mainly nailed to walls, about 3 meters above the ground.

Relevant personnel from the Comprehensive Maintenance Management Department of Municipal Facilities under the Nanjing Urban Management Bureau stated that the reason was mainly due to too many entities previously responsible for setting up road signs. Civil affairs departments would set them up, construction departments would also set them up, and district-level government departments would conduct installations, each designing their own styles without uniformity. They had also submitted reports to the municipal government suggesting the unification of road signs, but due to the need for large sums of money for replacement, it eventually came to nothing.

Currently, there are at least six to seven types of road signs on the roads.

Numerous road signs

In this standardization process, all road signs with advertisements will be dismantled and reinstalled, and it is stipulated that no advertisements will be allowed on road signs in the future.

Standardization: 30,792 road signs

Standardizing road names

According to statistics, there are a total of 7,265 roads in the city, among which 3,211 are maintained by municipal authorities and 4,054 are non-municipal maintained, requiring the standardization of 30,792 road signs. It is planned to gradually improve within three years before the "Youth Olympic Games," based on the financial arrangements of higher authorities.

Relevant personnel stated that previously, some roads used planned names or engineering names during development and construction, such as Guiyi Road and Gui'er Road in Yuhuatai District, which were temporary engineering names. This time, besides unifying the style, road names will also be standardized, all set according to the standardized road names provided by the Geographical Names Office.

Increasing advertisements

South-north direction road signs are green background with white letters, east-west direction road signs are blue background with white letters, Chinese characters on top, pinyin below, indicating direction. The guide also makes detailed regulations on the materials, geometric dimensions, fonts, font sizes, and installation positions of the various parts of the road signs.

Relevant personnel from the Urban Appearance Landscape Department of the Nanjing Urban Management Bureau stated that many road signs carry advertisements, and even advertisement lightboxes have been installed, broadcasting commercial advertisements. Strictly speaking, these can already be considered outdoor advertisements. According to relevant regulations, any setting of outdoor advertisements must obtain administrative permits from the Advertising Brightening Department of the Urban Management Bureau, and only after permission can they be set up. As far as he knows, most of the advertisements on the road signs currently appearing in Nanjing have not been reported for approval and thus belong to violations.

Based on the guide, the rectification work for all city road signs has started since July, involving the first batch of demonstration settings on 21 roads, installing a total of 326 road signs. These roads include: Caochangmen Avenue, Hanzhongmen Avenue, Heilongjiang Road, Mengdu Avenue, Jiangdong North Road, Nanhu Road, Huaihai Road (Zhongshan South Road - Hongwu Road), Wangfu Avenue, Wenchang Alley, Xianhe Street, Pingjiangfu Road, Zhan Garden Road, Dinghuaimen Avenue, Jiangbian Road, Sipailou (Xuefu Road), Dashiqiao, Xuejia Alley, Jinxiang River Road, Dusi Alley, Jizhaoying, Zhangjiacaiyuan.

Management: Formulating road sign installation guidelines

Not only the colors of the road signs, but also in recent years, street road sign advertisements have become more and more. For example, at the intersection of Pearl Hotel on Zhujiang Road, apart from the name of Zhujiang Road on the top, both sides of the entire lightbox are large advertisements. On Changjiang Road, huge road sign lightboxes feature sports public service advertisements, and on Zhongshan East Road, one side of the road sign facing the fast lane is a public service advertisement, while the other side facing the pedestrian path shows two maps, with the upper one being an enlarged map of the streets near the road sign and the lower one being a miniature map of Nanjing City.
