Google has just announced the launch of Google Gears for mobile, which is essentially the mobile version. In other words, developers can now use Google Gears for mobile to create offline versions of mobile applications. However, currently, Google Gears for mobile only supports the IE Mobile browser on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5/6 platforms. There are already good examples of applications using Google Gears for mobile, such as the mobile versions of Zoho (mobile.zoho.com) and Buxfer (m.buxfer.com), which leverage Google Gears for mobile to allow users to continue using their services even when their phones are not connected to the internet. Nevertheless, the prerequisite remains that the user’s phone must be based on the Windows Mobile 5/6 platform. It is believed that Google will support more platforms in the future because, in terms of market share, Windows Mobile lags far behind Symbian. Of course, the main focus of Google Gears for mobile will ultimately be on Google's own Android platform.
