Fortran creator Backus passes away

John W. Backus, the creator of Fortran, died Saturday at his home in Ashland, Oregon. He was 82. Fortran, developed by an IBM team led by Backus, was the first widely used programming language. In a sense, the development of Fortran opened the door to modern computing.
