Architect Lloyd Russell provided a perfect solution - the desert home he designed near Palm Springs, California. In addition to using reclaimed wood, Russell also considered passive cooling technology (using technical means or design to cool buildings without consuming electricity). The steel-framed shade canopy effectively blocks sunlight, and cool breezes flow through the gap between the canopy and the house, taking away hot air. The movable walls and large floor-to-ceiling windows also ensure good ventilation indoors.
