◎Introduction:

A flying saucer from a star in the galaxy approaches Earth and finally lands in New York City, USA. In response to this seemingly unfriendly extraterrestrial visitor, the American police respond strongly and attack. However, the intelligent alien Klaatu did not come to invade Earth but rather to warn humanity - if there are further "provocations" against peace, Earth will face destruction. Accompanying him is Gort, a robot with superhuman strength who can easily incapacitate humans.

After landing, these two visitors are taken by the police to a place for questioning. Due to the unfriendly behavior of the police, Klaatu eventually escapes on his own. Through communication with humans, Klaatu begins to learn about Earth and humanity, giving him insight into this human habitat. By chance, Klaatu meets Helen Benson and her son Bobby, who lead him on a tour of New York. Ultimately, Klaatu stops at the Lincoln Memorial because he sees words written by Lincoln long ago, and he knows that these words hold hope for saving the Earth.

When Helen and her son begin to doubt Klaatu, he frankly tells them the purpose of his and Gort's visit. It turns out that Gort is a member of the Galactic Robot Enforcement Team, tasked with upholding universal peace. They believe that humanity poses an increasing threat to universal peace, so it is necessary to destroy Earth.

The showdown begins. Will the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto" that Klaatu saw at the Lincoln Memorial truly be the code to save humanity? Will the Earth's destruction war begin? Will Earth really face extinction? Who will be the ultimate savior?

Behind-the-scenes Production

Tribute to the Classic

The science fiction film "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951), directed by Robert Wise, is one of the classic alien films in cinema history and is highly regarded by fans. Now, director Scott Derrickson remakes this classic. Talking about the original version, the new version's creative team expressed their respect for the classic and discussed the differences between the two versions. Director Scott Derrickson said, "I think it's a movie with soul. Its greatness lies in a quality I've been trying to understand and bring into the new film." Keanu Reeves plays the alien Klaatu in the new version. Speaking of the old version, he also showed great respect, believing that "it's indeed a classic, a masterpiece of its time, and the story is equally great."

Scott Derrickson talked about the similarities and differences between the two movies, "Both films are about humanity's self-destruction. It's our trend, our habit, we're heading down that path, but hopefully, both films end with humanity preventing tragedy. This was the most important message conveyed by the previous film and is also what this film expresses. However, due to the difference in times, the details expressed in both films are not exactly the same. And since they were filmed in different eras, the problems we face are different too. Now is the right time to remake it. Regardless of anything else, just in terms of visual special effects, today's technology is incomparable to the past, which is crucial for a sci-fi movie."

For remaking such a classic film, many people have different opinions. Regarding this, director Scott Derrickson said, "Some audiences think not all classics need to be remade, and I respect that view. People holding this opinion are not absolutely wrong. If someone wants to remake 'Casablanca,' I would be very uncomfortable. If they want to remake 'The Wizard of Oz,' I would also be very confused. As for this movie, I think there are very good reasons to remake it. Because it's inspiring, showing the spirit of humanity, adaptability, and confidence and determination when facing survival and despair, enthusiasm, hope, sincerity. It will be an enlightening film, but no matter what, it will uplift the heart!"

The Only Choice for the Lead Role

In 1994, producer Evan Spelfogel and 20th Century Fox released "Speed," starring Keanu Reeves, which was a huge success and propelled Keanu Reeves to the ranks of Hollywood's top stars. Later, while in a studio office, Evan Spelfogel saw the poster for the 1951 version of "The Day the Earth Stood Still," prompting him to consider remaking the film and planning to have Keanu Reeves play Klaatu. In 2005, when David Scarpa began writing the script, Tom Rothman took over Fox and agreed to remake the film. Thus, the plan for the movie proceeded smoothly. David Scarpa mentioned that the Katrina hurricane event inspired his new script. Director Scott Derrickson originally greatly admired the original film's director Robert Wise, having met him when he was a film student. Although Derrickson didn't like remaking films much, he liked this script — retelling the story, not recreating it. When all conditions were in place, filming began in 2007.

When talking about Keanu Reeves' performance as the male lead, director Scott Derrickson praised endlessly, "Keanu has a unique ability that other actors don't possess. I'm not exaggerating or praising him baselessly; I admire his performance in 'The Matrix.' I believe no one else could portray Neo as vividly as he does. I think the reason Keanu succeeded with Neo isn't just his natural acting skills but his ability to blend the character's traits with his own and express them in his own way; he also knows where the audience's interest lies in this character and how to adjust his state and acting style to get closer to the audience's 'interest point,' thereby stimulating their viewing interest. Such an actor is precisely what the role of Klaatu in 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' needs. I don't want viewers to describe this film as strange or exciting; I hope after watching this film, everyone will think about some of the issues raised in it, things humanity should ponder. I know Keanu can create such an effect, taking this film to a deeper level."
