Synopsis of "Warm Spring"

The story takes place in the late eighties, in a remote and impoverished small mountain village. The lively and kind girl, Little Flower, lives happily under the care of her father, mother, and grandmother, despite not being wealthy. Her mother is about to give birth, and her father goes to work in an illegal coal mine to earn more money. On a day of heavy rain, Little Flower's father is buried under the collapsed coal mine, and her mother loses her life due to internal bleeding caused by stress and catching a cold. From then on, Little Flower lives with her blind and sick grandmother, relying on each other for survival. The sensible Little Flower supports her almost disintegrating home with her small body, but her tears and countless efforts ultimately fail to save her only remaining family member, her grandmother, leaving Little Flower as an orphan.

In the poor village where food is life, every household struggles to get by, and no one is willing to take Little Flower in. She temporarily stays at the Village Chief's house. Her arrival causes significant disruption to the Village Chief's family, which already has two children. The Village Chief's wife shows extreme prejudice against Little Flower, leading to constant arguments between the couple over her. Adding to this, their own children also reject Little Flower, leaving the Village Chief powerless to protect her.

Little Flower's parents-in-law, who know how to calculate gains, decide to adopt her to claim her land. With Little Flower’s arrival, her lazy foster mother no longer needs to do housework; all the heavy chores such as laundry, cooking, taking care of Iron Egg, cutting pig grass, chopping chicken feed, etc., fall on Little Flower. From then on, Little Flower lives under the watchful eyes of her adoptive parents, working from dawn till dusk and frequently beaten or starved without reason by her foster mother. Unable to endure the abuse, Little Flower escapes her birthplace, Upper River Village, under the cover of darkness.

Second Dog finds Little Flower lying unconscious from hunger on the road and brings her back to Peony Village. No one is willing to take in a stray child, but Old Master Baocolumn, moved by pity for the nearly lifeless Little Flower, quietly carries her home.

Baocolumn’s daughter-in-law, Fragrant Grass, has been unable to bear children for many years, enduring various gossips in the village. Over the years, all the family's money has been spent on medicine because she cannot have children. When she learns that Baocolumn brought home a stray child, she angrily demands that he send the child back immediately. Baocolumn also complains that his own life is already hard, yet another mouth to feed is unnecessary. Poor Little Flower, tearfully pleads with her grandfather not to send her away, promising to do lots of work and eat only one meal a day. Out of kindness, Old Master Baocolumn cannot bear to see Little Flower suffer anymore and decides to keep her... From then on, the already laughter-scarce home becomes even worse due to Little Flower's arrival. The village gossip constantly touches Fragrant Grass's pain points, prompting her to run back to her parents' home in anger.

Little Flower is exceptionally understanding and caring for her grandfather, living together in the mud hut. Laughter finally fills the mud hut. Fragrant Grass, hearing the occasional laughter from next door, feels extremely jealous. Under her mother's careful arrangement, they decide to send Little Flower away. Dreaming of maternal love, Little Flower repeatedly approaches Baocolumn and Fragrant Grass with sincerity and innocence. Not only does Fragrant Grass show no gratitude, but she repeatedly exploits Little Flower's simplicity and kindness to deceive her away. However, due to the appearance of Old Master Baocolumn, Little Flower is never sent away. Tired of Fragrant Grass's attitude, Old Master Baocolumn starts anew with Little Flower. Every day, Little Flower follows her grandfather to the fields and cooks for him, living heartbreakingly but happily.

Understanding Little Flower not only does not hold a grudge against her uncle and aunt for hurting her, but she continues to touch Baocolumn and Fragrant Grass's hearts with her tolerance and kindness. Finally, facing a seven-year-old child, they shed tears of repentance...

Old Master Baocolumn and Little Flower are invited back to the main house. Seeing the carefully prepared dinner by Baocolumn and Fragrant Grass, the grandfather and granddaughter find it hard to swallow through their sobs. Fragrant Grass dresses Little Flower in new clothes she made herself. Tears streaming down her face, Little Flower rushes into Fragrant Grass's arms and cries out 'Mother'...
