[Plot Introduction]

Adapted from the eponymous novel by Wu Qiang.

In early winter of 1946, Chiang Kai-shek's forces launched a large-scale and fierce offensive against the East China Liberated Area. A certain army of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), led by Shen Zhenxin, engaged in fierce battle with the Nationalist Army's elite reorganized 74th Division led by Zhang Lingfu outside Lianshui City in northern Jiangsu, then actively retreated north to Shandong. The reorganized 74th Division was extremely arrogant, coordinating with the 83rd Division and 200,000 others, advancing towards our Linyi direction in Shandong. The enemy troops stationed in Jinan under Commander Li also moved simultaneously to Laifu and Xintai, attempting to encircle our army from the south and north. Our Field Army headquarters decided to leave some main force in the southern line to hold back the enemy, while most would turn northward, determined to first eliminate Li’s troops in the north. The famous Laifu Campaign began.

The task for Shen Zhenxin's unit was to capture Tusi Port Town to the north of Laifu City, cutting off the retreat route for the enemies in Laifu. One regiment led by Colonel Liu Sheng and Political Commissar Chen Jian was left as the general reserve team. Both Colonel Liu Sheng and Company Commander Shi Donggen were eager for battle and showed some impatience after being left behind. The war situation changed rapidly, with the five enemy divisions in Laifu attempting to break through in the direction of Tusi Port Town under our army's fierce attack. The battle at Tusi Port Town was still intense when our Field Army headquarters instructed that the battle must be quickly resolved. General Shen immediately ordered Colonel Liu Sheng and Political Commissar Chen Jian to lead their troops into the battle. Liu Sheng had already understood the situation of the enemy at Tusi Port Town beforehand, so he used a rapid assault force to bypass the front line, insert into the heart of the enemy, and swiftly eliminated the enemy division headquarters. After the battle at Tusi Port Town ended, they immediately turned around to block the fleeing enemies from Laifu, capturing a large number of prisoners. The great victory inspired the entire army. However, some individuals — such as Company Commander Shi Donggen — were blinded by victory, and General Shen severely criticized him.

Ajue, a woman from northern Jiangsu whose hometown fell and suffered cruel persecution by the enemy, crossed mountains and rivers to find her husband Yang Jun in Shandong and requested again to join the army to fight the enemy. She brought the hopes of her hometown relatives: for the army to eliminate the Nationalist 74th Division and avenge the townsfolk. With the reorganized 74th Division led by Zhang Lingfu as the vanguard, the Nationalist Army attacked Mengyin County in Shandong, attempting to annihilate our East China Field Army in the Yimeng Mountains. In order to disperse and restrain the enemy, Shen Zhenxin's army moved from the west side of the Yimeng Mountains to the enemy's rear in southern Shandong. The 74th Division failed in its attack on Tanbu and, under the strong pressure from our eastern, western, and northern armies, retreated southward in disgrace. Shen Zhenxin's army rushed overnight to seize Duo Zhuang, cutting off the enemy's retreat route and tightly surrounding the 74th Division on Mount Menglianggu. Zhang Lingfu was trapped and panicked, trying to escape annihilation with a feint strategy: launching a fake attack on our 540 High Ground while attempting to break through from the 385 High Ground. Our army exposed the enemy's conspiracy and shattered their breakout attempt with a powerful offensive. During the battle, Colonel Liu Sheng unfortunately sacrificed his life. When occupying the peak of Mount Menglianggu, the soldiers of Company Commander Shi Donggen formed a human ladder to climb the steep cliffs, directly attacking Zhang Lingfu's command post cave. With no way out, Zhang Lingfu committed suicide along with his generals. The red sun hung high in the sky, the clouds clear and beautiful, as our various armies triumphantly met on Mount Menglianggu. Flags fluttered like forests, cheers echoing like thunder.

This is an excellent military historical film. It takes the three battles of Lianshui, Tusi Port, and Menglianggu as the main thread, describing the story of the People's Liberation Army eliminating the Nationalists' elite 74th Division under conditions of overwhelming enemy superiority.
