In the field of cargo transportation, Japan Airlines (JAL) has previously mainly relied on renting out freight space on its planes to generate revenue. This partnership marks JAL's move to begin directly undertaking large-scale freight contracts. On the other hand, Mitsui & Co.'s group has maritime and land transportation companies. By teaming up with JAL, they can provide comprehensive integrated transportation services.

Analysts pointed out that amid a global economic downturn, the demand for international cargo transportation has also significantly declined, especially in air cargo transportation. In the 2008 fiscal year, JAL's freight business sales decreased by 15% compared to the previous year, making the enhancement of profitability an urgent priority.
