The outbreak of pink eye requires strengthened prevention. What is pink eye, and what are the reasons for its severe contagion? Common pathogens include the pneumococcus bacteria, Koch-Weeks bacillus, influenza bacillus, Staphylococcus aureus, and streptococcus. The latter two bacteria can normally reside in the conjunctival sac without causing conjunctivitis, but they may trigger an acute episode of conjunctivitis when other conjunctival lesions occur or when local or systemic resistance decreases. Bacteria can spread rapidly through direct contact with the conjunctiva via various media in public places, group settings such as kindergartens, schools, and families, leading to epidemics. Especially in spring and autumn, when respiratory diseases like flu and rhinitis are prevalent, the pathogens causing conjunctivitis may also spread through respiratory secretions.
