The more engine oil, the better? Expert interpretation of a few oil usage tips
By Yi Xiaoxun: The other day, after sending my beloved car for repair, I took a taxi outside the repair shop. A taxi driver saw me send my car for repair and started chatting with me about his insights on car maintenance. He said that we novices who don't know much about cars might not be aware that it's best to make sure the mechanic tightens the bolts as much as possible during maintenance; the drive belt should also be as tight as possible; as for engine oil, many 4S stores cut corners by adding just a little bit, but in fact, it's better to add more oil. I really want to know if what he said is true.
Professional viewpoint:
In fact, the above three statements are all misconceptions in car maintenance. If maintenance is done improperly, these misconceptions can cause vehicle malfunctions, so everyone should not easily follow them.
Misconception one: The tighter the bolts, the better
There are many fasteners on cars that use bolts and nuts, which should have sufficient preload, but they shouldn't be over-tightened either. If over-tightened, the bolts and connecting parts will undergo permanent deformation, the preload will actually decrease, and there may even be slippage or breakage.
Misconception two: The tighter the drive belt, the better
The water pump and generator of a car engine use V-belts for transmission. If the drive belt is adjusted too tightly, it is easy to stretch and deform, and the pulley and bearing are prone to bending and damage.
Misconception three: The more engine oil, the better
If there is too much oil, when the engine is running, the crankshaft handle and connecting rod will produce violent stirring, not only increasing the internal power loss of the engine, but also because more splashed oil on the cylinder wall can lead to burning and oil discharge faults.
