**What is an Approach?**

"The first thirty seconds of approaching a client determines the success or failure of a sale." This is a shared experience among successful salespeople. So, what exactly does it mean to approach a client? In professional sales techniques, we define approaching a client as "the phase from making initial contact with a potential customer to transitioning into the main topic."

1. **Clarify Your Main Topic**

Each time you approach a client, there will be a different main topic. For example, the topic might be scheduling a meeting with a potential client you’ve never met before, or inviting the client to attend a product demonstration.

2. **Choose the Method of Approach**

There are three primary methods for approaching clients: telephone, direct visit, and letter.

The choice of method is closely related to the main topic. For instance, if your goal is to schedule a meeting with the client, the telephone is an excellent tool for this purpose. However, it’s important to note that you should avoid expanding the conversation to include details about the product's features or discussing pricing. This is especially true if the product you're selling is relatively complex, as such topics may not be suitable for a phone conversation.

3. **What Are Approach Statements?**

In professional sales techniques, the words used during the first interaction with a client are referred to as approach statements. These are crucial in setting the tone and direction of the conversation.
