Plot summary:
During the Spring and Autumn period, Bo Yan (played by Ding Yongdai), the lord of Yan Cheng, sought advice on state governance from the King of Zheng but received no response. Suddenly, a young man named Gongsun Yu (played by Cheng Haofeng) appeared in Yan Cheng, claiming to be a royal grandson of Zheng. Gongsun Yu discovered at the mulberry tree mound on the border of Yan Cheng that Luo Fu (played by Shu Chang) was actually the princess of Yan Cheng. During an incident where the states of Wu and Yue provoked trouble at the mulberry tree mound, Gongsun Yu cleverly saved the princess, strengthening his position in Yan Cheng. However, Gongsun Yu was merely a brilliant move in Fan Li's strategy of "prospering Yan to govern Wu." The real royal grandson had already perished in the mountains with the reply letter from the King of Zheng to Bo Yan.
In several calamities at the mulberry tree mound, He Zidan (played by Wang Bowen) shared hardships with Luo Fu and unexpectedly obtained the King of Zheng's reply letter. To treat his sister-in-law's illness, the ambitious He Zidan reluctantly sold himself into slavery and became a servant of Gongsun Yu. After several contests for Luo Fu, Gongsun Yu's identity was exposed, forcing him to leave Yan Cheng. By coincidence, He Zidan presented the late King Zheng's letter and was entrusted by Bo Yan to supervise the construction of the dual rivers and dual cities project.
At this time, Yan Cheng was under attack from all sides: internal ministers were plotting rebellion, while the states of Wu, Yue, and Chu were eyeing it greedily. The King of Chu was enraged by Bo Yan's birthday gift, and Goujian of Yue forced Shi Mai to attack Yan Cheng to deprive him of his military authority. Gongsun Yu and He Zidan had to act separately, each using their talents to resolve the crisis facing Yan Cheng.
The completion of the three-river, three-city hydraulic structure and the establishment of the status of a trade border market gave Yan Cheng a brief period of peace. At the celebration of the three-rivers, three-cities, many wise men of the Spring and Autumn period came to Yan Cheng. Both Luo Fu and Bo Yan hoped to maintain Yan Cheng's neutrality in the power struggle among the states of Wu, Yue, and Chu through trade, ensuring its survival.
In the battle between Wu and Yue, King Helü of Wu fled to Yan Cheng after being defeated, where he was saved by Luo Fu but ultimately succumbed to his injuries after being wounded by He Zidan. The states of Wu and Yue became bitter enemies. When Yue suffered a famine, Fan Li came to Yan Cheng to buy grain and unexpectedly met Gongsun Yu. Out of old feelings, Gongsun Yu lent him all his money, unknowingly causing great harm.
Unexpectedly, during a bountiful year, Yan Cheng was hit by a locust plague. Due to He Zidan's conscription of laborers to build military fortifications, there was no hope of a timely harvest. When Yan Cheng faced total crop failure, they found that Gongsun Yu's granary was empty. With no other choice, Gongsun Yu could only go to Yue to urge them to send grain. However, Fan Li and the King of Yue reneged on their promise and refused to deliver the grain. In desperation, Bo Yan had no choice but to dig up the tomb of the old lady, retrieve the buried jade treasures, and use them to exchange for grain from the King of Chu to alleviate the urgent needs of Yan Cheng.
Taking advantage of the situation, the King of Chu attempted to seize Yan Cheng and detained Bo Yan. At this time, the states of Wu and Yue also took the opportunity to raise troops. With three armies pressing down, Yan Cheng was about to be destroyed. The military equipment built by He Zidan proved powerless against the strong enemy, and he died in battle. Finally, Luo Fu sacrificed her young life to preserve this ancient city of a thousand years in the turbulent Spring and Autumn period.
In 2003 AD, the Wujin District Government of Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, where the Spring and Autumn site of Yan Cheng is located, applied to UNESCO for recognition of Yan Cheng as a World Heritage Site.
