Jason (played by Michael A. Angarano) is probably the world's biggest collector of kung fu movies, except for Quentin Tarantino.

One summer day, this 17-year-old boy was riding his bike to a pawnshop in Boston's Chinatown to look for collectible Chinese kung fu films, but he always ran into trouble when going through the alleys near his home because Jason was often targeted by a gang of thugs and frequently bullied by them. Jason was an expert at video games and knew all about kung fu movies; he always wished he could become a kung fu master himself. However, the owner of the pawnshop, Old Ho, believed that Jason wasn't cut out for it—he didn’t even know what kung fu really was.

One day, Jason accidentally discovered a mysterious golden staff in the pawnshop, which led him to pass through the "door without a door" and arrive in ancient China! He found himself in the middle of a shocking prophecy: a messenger must return the legendary weapon to its rightful owner to free the Monkey King who had been trapped in stone for five hundred years.

In ancient and mysterious China, Jason began a perilous journey. Along the way, he met many characters from the martial arts world or ancient legends: the wandering poet Lu Yan, one of the Eight Immortals and a Drunken Fist master (played by Jackie Chan), the vengeful swordsman Golden Swallow (played by Liu Yifei), and the silent yet powerful Monk Mo (played by Jet Li). The group of four traveled together to Mount Five Fingers, where the legendary Monkey King was imprisoned by the evil Jade War God (played by 邹兆龙). The Jade Emperor’s general sent her top killer, the notorious White Hair Witch Neichang (played by Li Bingbing), to pursue and attack Jason and his companions repeatedly. This forced Jason to not only diligently learn Chinese kung fu but also face his inner fears. Is Jason's journey just a dream brought on by his obsession with kung fu, or has he truly traveled through time to fulfill an ancient prophecy?
